 The Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the most sacred Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, and it is located in Ujjain, in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India.

Jyotirlinga Status: Mahakaleshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, which are considered the most sacred abodes of Shiva.


The term "Mahakal" means the Lord of Time or Death, symbolizing Shiva’s power over all aspects of life and time.


The Lingam here is said to be Swayambhu (self-manifested), unlike other lingams which are ritually installed.

One of the temple’s most famous rituals, performed daily at dawn.


It involves offering sacred ash (bhasma) to Lord Shiva.


Pre-registration is required to attend, due to the large crowds.


Men are required to wear traditional attire (dhoti) to participate.
