The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times in history — by foreign invaders and rulers.

Originally believed to have been built by the Moon God (Soma) in gold, rebuilt by Ravana in silver, Krishna in wood, and Bhimdev (Solanki ruler) in stone.

Notably plundered by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1025 CE .
