Omkareshwar Temple,Madhya Pradesh

 Omkareshwar Temple, located on Mandhata (Om) island in the Narmada River near Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh, is one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva .





๐Ÿ•‰️ Significance & Legend of Omkareshwar Temple:- 

*The island’s shape resembles the sacred syllable “เฅ”, giving the temple its name “Omkareshwar” (Lord of Om) .


*Shiva is said to have manifested as a radiant Jyotirlinga here. The island honors two forms: Omkareshwar (on the island) and Mamleshwar (on the mainland bank) .


*According to legend, King Mandhata performed great penance here and Shiva blessed the place with a self-manifested lingam .


๐Ÿ›️ History & Architecture of Omkareshwar Temple:-

The Paramaras built the temple in the 11th century, later maintained by the Chauhans. Renovations were undertaken by Holkar queens, including Devi Ahilyabai .


Constructed in the Nagara style, the temple features intricate stone carvings, a grand Sabha Mandap with 60 pillars, and multiple shrines .

๐Ÿ”ฑ Temple & Rituals of Omkareshwar Temple:-

The central Jyotirlinga is a black stone shaft immersed in water, accompanied by a white stone of Parvati .

Devotees perform Abhisheka thrice daily with milk, curd, water, and keep offerings at a symbolic bed and Chaupad (game board) for Shiva & Parvati—a unique “Shayan Aarti” ritual .


The nearby Mamleshwar Temple completes the Jyotirlinga pilgrimage and is under ASI protection .

*By Air: Nearest airport is Indore (Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport), ~80 km away .


*By Train: Easily accessible via Indore or Khandwa Junction; local Omkareshwar Road station is nearby .


*By Road: Connected by NH 47; regular buses and taxis available from Indore, Ujjain (~80 km) and Khandwa (~16 km) .

*Ideal visiting season: October to March (10–30°C). Summers can exceed 40°C; monsoons May–Sept may disrupt travel .


*Temple Timings: 5 AM–9 PM daily

*Parikrama: Circular pilgrimage (16 km) around the island with various temples and ashrams along the route .


Special Note :-Photography inside the main temple is prohibited. Respect temple etiquette by dressing modestly and removing footwear.
