Parasnath Hill, also known as Sammet Shikhar or Marang Buru, is the highest point in Jharkhand, standing at approximately 1,365 m (4,478 ft) above sea level. It's situated in Giridih district on the Chota Nagpur Plateau .
The summit of this hill is the sacred Jain pilgrimage center called Shikharji, arguably the most important Jain tirtha. It's revered because 20 of the 24 Tirthankaras achieved moksha (liberation) here, including the 23rd Tirthankara, Parshvanatha, who attained nirvana in 772 BCE .
The term “Shikharji” means “venerable peak.” It’s also called Sammed Shikhar (“peak of concentration”), honoring the deep meditation and liberation that occurred here .

The pilgrimage generally starts from Madhuban, the base village. Pilgrims trek through forested terrain on a concrete-paved path or ride in a doli (palanquin), covering a round trip of ~30 km, while a full parikrama (circumambulation) can span up to 54 km .
Along the way, there are 31 tonks, each enshrining the footprint of a Tirthankara. The highlight is the Parshvanatha Tonk at the summit, marked by a distinctive canopy (chatra) where devotees offer rice and sweets .
Significant temples include the Bhomiyaji Temple (at the base), the architecturally notable Nichli Temple from the 18th century, and a marble temple known as Svarna Bhadra Koot or Jal Mandir near the peak .
The main shrine dedicated to Parshvanatha is often called the Bageecha Temple, housing a carved idol of Parasnath dating back some 300 years .

The hill is also sacred to the Santal tribal community, who revere it as Marang Buru—the supreme deity—and use the area for annual rituals and tribal council gatherings (Lo Bir Baisi). A longstanding coexistence exists, though tensions have occasionally flared over conservation and religious preservation .
In response to protests from the Jain community to protect the hill’s sanctity, the central government declared the area an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) and the Jharkhand government officially recognized Shikharji as a place of worship in 2018 .

How to Reach -Nearest station: Parasnath Railway Station (Isri Bazaar, ~25 km from Madhuban). Accessible via the Delhi–Howrah Grand Chord line.
From station:- taxis to Madhuban, then trekking. Southern route via Isri Bazaar (~8 km climb) or northern route via Madhuban (~13 km) .
Pilgrimage Trek Total path ~27–30 km—9 km ascent, ~9 km across the summit, 9 km descent; done in one day typically, starting early morning .
Festivals -Major events include Parshvanath Jayanti, Kartik Poornima, Diwali, and Moksha Saptami, celebrated with rituals, lights, and devotional fervor .
